SE Asia 2020 – Day 01 – Incheon Airport

Flight to Korea

Unfortunately, Korea is only a layover, but I already can’t wait to plan a trip to explore this wonderful place! It was a 10-hour flight from YVR but it flew by for me. I was with Air Canada, the seats were comfy, and the seat between this girl and I was empty so we had ample space. But given that I’m short, legroom was never an issue for me, heh. I also didn’t nap at all and watched 5 movies – seriously, it was the best.

I used to watch most of the new releases – that weren’t superhero movies – when they came out back in the day, but now I’m many years behind on them. So it was kind of nice to go on a movie binge, it was really refreshing. I forgot how much I loved on-screen storytelling and the places it can take me.

The 5 movies I watched

  • Ready or Not
  • Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
  • MIB: International
  • Missing Link
  • Shazam!

I would probably need a separate post for my thoughts on the movies, but until then, let’s talk about the food! I obviously don’t expect much from airplane meals but I’ve always wanted to compare from destination to destination! During this flight, they brought out meals every time I started to feel hungry. Let’s give that a moment of gratitude. Like, seriously. 😍

Kimchi Pork + Rice

First meal: Kimchi Pork + Rice. I don’t have much to say, there wasn’t much flavour and there was more rice than pork. I loved the salad mix though, what can I say, I’m corny.. 🙄

Japchae

Second Meal: Japchae (glass noodles with veggies). I liked this one, it was saucy. I added some chilli paste and that was all I needed. The fruit also contained mostly of pineapples, my favourite. 😊

Snack: When you think there’s no more food but they come out with chicken sandwiches. I was definitely nicely fed this flight!

Overnight layover in Incheon Airport

Set-up beside the performance stage in Incheon Airport.

I was so tired when I landed, I was debating on if I should nap or just eat and pull through the evening. So many options in the airport it was hard to choose what to eat! They had a whole floor just dedicated to food! Since I wasn’t that hungry, I ended up just getting dessert from Sobok.

Rice ice-cream!

Sobok: they have a location in the airport and in Hongdae! This is ice-cream made with brown rice! I want to say it’s dairy-free but there may be milk in it. Either way, it’s still delicious and refreshing! It comes with an Injeolmi iceball (ice-cream on the outside and rice cake in the middle). I got the special which comes with 9 more iceballs on the side – worth it. When you get to the bottom, I think they use a sweet rice syrup (like honey) with toasted seeds and squash. It’s so good!

After I took my time to finish my dessert, I needed to rest. When I was doing research on where I can sleep during my layover, I found out that there was a spa in the airport called Spa on Air!

If you’ve never been to a Korean spa, then man oh man, you’re in for a treat. I’m not going to go in-depth with it here but it essentially has all you need to relax and rest. Showers, hot tub, sauna, infrared, and clay rooms, as well as resting spaces for not more than $25CAD a night. The shorter you stay, the cheaper it is here.

I showered, relaxed in the hot tub for a bit and went to rest. I think I would’ve slept better if this other lady in the room didn’t snore very loudly the whole night, but I guess I was also worried I wouldn’t get up for my morning flight so I never reached rem sleep anyway.

This concludes my Day 01! Day 02 will consist of my arrival in Vietnam and the first day of Lunar New Year!

Thanks for reading and remember to keep chasing the impossible!

Ps. Let me know if you found my puns… 🙄
